We are now beginning the time space designated as November 27, 2019. It’s really the prep day for the 28th and Thanksgiving. A day to make all the dishes that can be held over for tomorrow. One of my memories was making Ostakaka (Swedish Cheese dessert) with my mother. It took 3 or 4 hours to make it and was a tradition in our house. I’m extremely lucky and smart enough to recognize my good fortune and not take it for granted. I grew up in a safe home with plenty of food and parents who loved me. Something to celebrate every day. There’s other things on this day: It’s Blackout Wednesday, National Bavarian Cream Pie Day, National Craft Jerky Day, National Electric Guitar Day, National Jukebox Day and National Pie In The Face Day. The Blackout Wednesday is about college kids coming home for Thanksgiving and going out to local bars to meet their friends, getting hammered and getting into accidents driving home. It’s an especially dangerous time to be on the roads around midnight. Now to the history of this day: In 1817 US soldiers attack Florida Indian village, beginning the first Seminole War. Since the Seminoles are a Florida tribe, I looked this one up and found that they were given a reservation in Central Florida in the treaty of 1832 and that I’m now living on land that was in the reservation. Since treaties between the US and Native Americans didn’t mean much, by 1855 the remaining Seminoles (there were 3 wars) were rounded up and sent to Oklahoma. There were 500 who escaped to the Everglades and stayed in Florida. Moving on. In 1895 Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel’s will establishes the Nobel Prize. In 1910 NY’s Penn Station opens as world’s largest railway terminal. I was there this year and it’s a pretty amazing place. Finally, on this day in 1965, 25,000 demonstrate against war in Vietnam in Washington, D.C. This is the year that I volunteered to join the Navy to avoid being drafted into the Army. This happens to be Bruce Lee’s birthday (1940) He said “The key to immortality is living a life worth remembering”. This is the day in 8 BC that the Roman poet Horace assumed room temperature. He said “Life is largely a matter of expectation.” If you expect it to be good or bad, you’re probably right. I expect today to be especially good. Hope you share my expectation. Abide
