Let me start today’s post with condolences to all my Eagles fan friends. I know it must be hard but it’s only a game. I woke up this morning in a warm house with plenty of food with out any serious aches or pains. I’m grateful for the life I have. Yesterday I watched a documentary film about people living in tents in the forest (not sure where but they get snow in the winter). I’m happy to be me. After all, it is November 18 and we’ve got some potential winner holidays: It’s Apple Cider Day, Mickey Mouse Day, National Princess Day, William Tell Day and Occult Day. In 1928 on this day, Mickey Mouse made his first appearance in the film Steamboat Willie. Now, about William Tell. This may be legend or fact. William Tell was Swiss living under Austrian rule. He is supposed to have killed the Austrian Governor who forced him to shoot an apple off the head of his son. Now you know more about Mr. Tell then you did a few seconds ago. Onto history: In 1865 Mark Twain publishes “Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” on this date. I’ve never read it. Maybe I will. Here’s a Mark Twain quote: “Go to heaven for the climate, hell for the company”. In 1874 National Woman’s Christian Temperance Union organizes in Cleveland. Dumb idea then, dumb idea now. In 1909 US invades Nicaragua, later overthrows President Zelaya. We have been mucking around in Central America for a long, long time. In 1916 British General Douglas Haig finally calls off the 1st Battle of the Somme in World War I after more than 1 million soldiers had been killed or wounded. Wow. Finally, in 1959 “Ben-Hur” directed by William Wyler and starring Charlton Heston premieres in New York City (Academy Awards Best Picture 1960). I’ll end this post with a few more quotes from Mark Twain. “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything”. “A person who won’t read has no advantage over a person who can’t read”. and “If you hold a cat by it’s tail, you learn things you can not learn any other way”. With that, I’ll end this post and start my wonderful, unique, one of a kind day. Abide
